Green light for new medical centre premises in Newcastle

Our plans to create a new medical centre building for Newcastle’s biggest GP practice have been approved by Newcastle City Council.

The proposals to build new premises for Saville Medical Group’s Newbiggin Hall branch surgery were granted permission at a virtual meeting of the council’s planning committee last week.

The scheme will create a new building just 500m from the existing site which will house all services from the current Newbiggin Hall branch surgery building and provide extra back office space for the whole practice.

Dr Samantha Graham from Saville Medical Group said: “At a time when modern and flexible medical facilities have been essential in the national response of primary care to coronavirus, this is a particularly important milestone for us. To have access to a magnificent brand new building on this scale will be utterly uplifting for patients and staff morale, an most importantly will comprehensively allow Saville Medical Group to deliver excellent patient care for the local community.”

Newcastle City Council has made the land available as part of the Newbiggin Hall estate redevelopment. The new medical centre, designed by P&HS Architects and supported by Abstract Healthcare, is an important piece of the wider community regeneration scheme to create new homes and retail units. We’ll be funding and delivering the project, with construction of the new building scheduled begin this summer. Contractor, Tolent Construction, will be working to the latest social distancing and hygiene guidance for the construction sector and the build should complete next year.

Andy Cooper, our Senior Development Manager, said: “At such a pivotal time for primary care in the community, modern facilities will be so important and we’re looking forward to getting construction started.”
